Sha'arei Hesed
Sha'arei Hesed literally means "Gates of loving-kindness" in Hebrew.
This is a neighbourhood in central Jerusalem that borders Rehavia and Nachlaot.
Sha'arei Hesed was established in 1909, on a plot of 40 dunam, long before the establishment of the State of Israel.
Sha'arei Hesed has maintained its religious-conservative character ever since it was established.
Small Apartments for Religious Jews in Jerusalem
Rabbi Salant and Rabbi Naftali Porush are credited with bringing in the funds from Jews abroad to build up Sha'arei Hesed.
Their intent in the early years of the 20th century was to build apartments for religious Jews in Jerusalem. Originally, Sha'arei Hesed was built for Ashkenazim only.
According to Wikipedia, the first 114 houses in Sha'arei Hesed "were built on long, narrow plots of land with a small yard in front or back."

A Modern Haredi Neighbourhood
Over the last 20 years or so, Sha'arei Hesed has become a modern Haredi neighborhood, with plenty of residents from outside of Israel.
These include from English-speaking countries but also from France as well.
There is also a high number of Yeshivas in Sha'arei Hesed, including Maalos Hatorah, Midrash Shmuel and Noam HaTalmud.
Popular & Well-Known Streets in Sha'arei Hesed
The streets in Sha'arei Hesed are almost all named after religious figures from ancient and modern Jewish history. The names express the religious character of the neighborhood.
Amongst the most popular and well-known streets in Sha'arei Hesed, are Ussishkin, Diskin, and Keren Kayemet L'Yisrael.
The latter (Keren Kayemet L'Yisrael) features plenty of shops, pharmacies and restaurants.
Sha'arei Hesed is also very close to the Great Synagogue.
Sha'arei Hesed Real Estate Nowadays
There have been great changes to Sha'arei Hesed in recent years. It is ultimately located in central Jerusalem, in a bustling area.
Once quiet and pastoral, Sha'arei Hesed has been replaced with urban noise and luxurious apartment buildings, which has given the neighborhood a luxurious character.
As a result, this area has become very popular amongst ultra-orthodox Jews of Anglo-Saxon descent.
